Biography

The Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, Arun Jaitley vas born on December 28, 1952. He did his schooling from St. Xavier's School, New Delhi, finishing school in 1969. He received his graduation degree in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi, in 1973 and also qualified for the Law examination from University of Delhi, in 1977. During his career as a student he was the recipient of several distinctions for his outstanding performance both in academics and extra curricular activities.

Arun Jaitley was President of Students, Union of Delhi University in 1974. During the period of proclamation of Internal Emergency, he was onder preventive detention for more than a year. He has recently presented a paper on Laws related to Corruption and Crime in India before the Indo-British Legal forum. He has been practising Law before the Supreme Court and several High Courts in the country since 1977. In 1990, he was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India.

He also represented the Indian Government in the United Nations General Assembly in 1998. He is a member of Bhartiya Janata Party as well as the National Executive of the Party. On January 28, 2004, he announced the Cabinet decision to free gold and silver imports from restrictions.
