Sunny started his career in Rahul Rawail-directed 'Betaab' in the early 1980's, where he portrayed the role of a childhood lover with convincing precision. Blockbuster 'Ghayal' gave Sunny the image of a rebellious young man out to avenge. His performances in movies like 'Damini', 'Arjun' and 'Jeet' were also praised.Sunny also directed a movie 'Dillagi' starring himself and his kid brother Bobby in lead roles, which tasted moderate success.

For the action role in 'Damini', he won the National Award. Sunny's role as India's 'one man army', out to destroy Pakistan's crusade against India, started with J.P. Dutta's 'Border', a war movie dealing with Indo-Pak war of 1971. Sunny's 'Gadar' became one of the biggest hits of 2001.
