Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998).Rani Mukherjee is the daughter of director Ram Mukherjee and cousing the most successful actress Kajol. Clearly the actress Rani has the right credentials--and genes--which gave her a quick start in the business. But Rani Mukherjee is a formidable talent in her own right. Her first Bollywood movie was "Raja Ki Ayegi Barrat." But she began to receive serious attention for her acting abilities after her performance in in "Ghulam."

Rani was in headlines again receiving the best supporting actress award from Filmaer for what is now considered her breakthrough role in "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai." Rani Mukherjee is currently filming several films including "Yuva," "Hum Tum, "1457: The Rising" and "Bajirao Mastani."

Rani's debut film was 'Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat'. The film did not do well at the box office. Her talent got an apt platform in the film 'Ghulam'. The film was a blockbuster. With the success of the film, Rani became a star overnight. The song 'Aati Kya Khandala' from the film became very popular. Her film 'Ruch Ruch Hota Hai' proved her as a versatile actress. Not only this the songs of the film too became very popular among the youth.

Rani got the opportunity to work with famous actor Ramal Hassan in the film 'Hey Ram'. The film did not do well commercially, but was critically acclaimed. Rani acted in a controversial yet successful film 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke'. She also played a small role in the blockbuster 'Rabhie Rhushi Rabhie Gham'. Her other films include 'BaadaF, 'Hadh Rar Di Aapne', 'Hello Brother' and 'Bas Itna Sa Rhwab Hai'

Member of the same illustrious film family from which Kajol draws her lineage Rani Mukherjee may still be at a distance from the citadel that houses her cousin. But there is no doubt about the light-eyed Bengali girl's mass appeal. Moreover, she is putting all her efforts and working hard to reach there.Precocious yet innocently oblivious of it, it is the actress's unassuming self which draw friends and well-wishers to her.

Producers made a beeline for Rani's door (she was riding high on the success of Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) and just as she was gradually shifting positions towards the top in the popularity charts, she started getting the jolts. Good nature did not really help Rani in gaining stronghold and consolidating her position in Mumbai.Films like Baadal cast a shadow on her prospects. The film left theatres in India without a whimper. Hope was alive in the form of Hadh Kar Di Aapne, which was in the pipeline. Rani had faith in Govinda and David Dhawan's saleability at the box office. Unfortunately, the film failed to raise a laugh and the cash boxes did not ring.

Rani tried to remain unfazed. She was looking towards the future and Hey Ram. As an actress, Rani was proud to be associated with an actor-director of Kamal Haasan's caliber and was thrilled to have Hey Ram in her lap. Even Hey Ram did not propel her career to the extent she had expected. There wasn't any critical appreciation of her performance in the film. Infact, Rani's fans became aloof when they saw their favorite actress locked in a passionate kiss in the film. The actress does not regret though. ''I wanted to work with Mr. Kamal Haasan. The rest did not matter'' she said in an interview some time ago.

Rani still is excited about the projects that are lined up as her next films. A series of unsuccessful runs have not dampened the giggly self. She continues to be sprightly. The most beautiful of the newcomers of the Bollywood and the one who's having a rapid growth towards her career and maturity both as a glamour queen and a performing actress - Rani Mukherjee - was born on 21 Mar '78. Being a cousin of the most successful actress Kajol, it's obvious that Rani too has got it through her genetic influences to enact the roles she's given. And it's a phenomenon that unless Rani hasn't put loads of concentration and tremendous personal effort in the roles she plays, she wouldn't have been where she is now.

Though she had the introduction into the Bollywood through her first movie "RAJA KI AAYEGI BARAAT", she was in the news with her nonchanlent and wonderful performance in "GHULAM" and with the third movie Rani was in headlines again receiving the "BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS " award from FILMFARE for her active and playful performance in "KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI" thus enhancing herself in the Bollywood.

Rani got the devastating looks, charm and a beautiful face. She could act with all the top actors and work with the top class producers and the directors within a span of 5 years. A great achievement for a newcomer like Rani. May be, she's making it upto her name, like a queen.
