He came to Delhi and did theatre with Barry John and the likes for a long time. Then he moved to Mumbai.
There he worked in some television programmes. He approached film directors for roles in films. But his unconventional looks proved to be an obstacle for him. He got small roles in films like 'Bandit Queen', 'Tamanna' and 'Dastak'. But his roles in the films went unnoticed.Keeping himself in the hunt, he continued to do television serials. His opportunity to show himself as an talented artist came in the form of Ram Gopal Varma's 'Satya'.
Cast as a second lead, Manoj carried the full film on his back with the stunning portrayal of the character, Bhiku Mahatre. His performance in the film was critically acclaimed. He was awarded with the National Award for his acting.
