Panipat
Panipat, 92 km north of Delhi, is reputed to be one of the most fly infested places in India — due, it is said, to a Moslem saint who is buried here. He is supposed to have totally rid Panipat of flies but when the people complained that he had done too good a job he gave them all the flies back, times a thousand.
It is also the site of three great battles although there is nothing much to be seen of these today. In 1526 Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi, King of Delhi, at Panipat and thus founded the Moghul empire in India. In 1556 Akbar defeated the Pathans at this same site. Finally in 1761 the Mah-rattas, who had succeeded the Moghuls, were defeated here by the Afghan forces of Ahmad Shah Durani.
