Sometimes called 'the Manchester of India' this important industrial town attracts very few tourists although it is not a great distance south of Luck-now.
During the 1857 Mutiny some of the more tragic events took place here, at that time known as Cawnpore. Sir Hugh Wheeler defended a part of the Cantonment for most of the month of June but with supplies virtually exhausted and having suffered considerable losses he surrendered only to have his party massacred.
